Foam Types
There are two basic types of Foam Insulation.
Open cell 1/2 pound semi-rigid foam (Sealection500) and Closed cell
2 pound ridged foam ( Heatlok Soy).
Open cell foam is a semi-rigid, 1/2 pound, low density,
water blown foam designed to be used indoors only. Just like its
name implies, the cells are open and relies on trapping air inside
of the foam to insulate and air seal. The blowing agent in open
cell foam is water, this helps the reaction process respond. There
are no toxic gases used or released in the process of creating open
cell foam insulation. Open cell foam is sprayed into place as a
two part liquid and expands about 120 times itself and cures into
place in a matter of seconds. Most open cell foams have a R-value
of 3.5 to 3.8 per inch. They also have the best cost per R-value
of foam insulation. It contains no ozone depletion chemicals, CFC,
HCFC, fibers, formaldehyde or asbestos. They work great as an air
seal and for sound control.

Closed cell 2 pound foam is a rigid, medium density
foam, that uses a hydrofluorocarbon as a blown agent that is ozone
safe and contains no volatile organic compounds (VOC). This blown
agent is trapped inside the closed cells and helps increase the
R-value, sort of like Argon is used in windows to increase the efficiency.
Closed cell foam is also sprayed into place as two part liquid and
expands into place about 30 to 40 times its self in seconds. Most
closed cell foams have an aged R-value of 6 to 7 per inch and can
be used as a vapor retarder after 1.5 inches, depending on the manufactures
testing. They work great indoors or outdoors and is also an air
seal. When used outside they must be protected from U.V. light.
Closed cell is considered water proof after 1.5 inches and should
not be used on roof undersides due to the fact if the roof ever
leaks the water will set on top of the foam and will ruin the roof
structure.
