Roofing Foam and Coatings

Installing the roofing foam.

Closed cell 3 pound roofing foam has been in use for many decades. You have probably seen a foam roof and did not know it. One of the most high profile foam roofs is the Super Dome in New Orleans, LA. After Hurricane Katrina came through and tore off the 5 year old roof that was on the dome, the Owners and Architects consider tearing down the building. They decide to save it but specified a “Hurricane Proof Roof”. The spray foam roofing industry was the only roofing industry

Roofing foam is sprayed into place just like all other kinds of foam on to flat or low sloped roofs. Closed cell roofing foam is water proof after about 1½”. It is very durable and hard. It will stick to about any thing that is clean and dry. It is a great way to get more insulation and a new roof in one shot.

After installing the roofing foam.

After installing the roofing foam it needs to protect from the U.V. lights of the sun. The sun will break the foam down over time if it is not protected.

There are two different ways to protect. The first is to install Acrylic Elastomeric paint. This is the least expensive way to cover it. It works well but is not the best way.

The best way to protect the foam is to install Volatile Free’s 540 Hybrid Polyurea coating. The easiest way to explain Polyurea is to tell you it is similar to the spray on bed liners you see in pickup trucks all over. This coating is a higher grade of material than the bed liners. This is the only coating for a flat roof you will find that can with stand ponding water!
